Dear members,

2020 has been without doubt an unprecedented one. No one could have seen this coming. The virus was just one part of the problem. The other is an issue that plagues humanity. An issue that involves, rights, respect, and justice. Events to the South of us, has caused us all to introspect and look at how we treat one another.

Do we see ourselves as ‘better’ than not that others solely based on the colour of our skin, the language we speak, the religion we follow? Or do we rise above it as one should? While these are interesting times, Martin Luther King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” Never has this been truer than today. The blatant disregard for truth and justice is taking a toll on mankind. Coupled with the COVID 19, the challenges are huge, but so is our resolve. ICPA is working hard to promote diversity, equality and justice.

This years line up of speakers exemplify the struggles that those who are disadvantaged have to face. Some succeed, others don’t.

Dear members,

It is with pleasure I write this update as Chair of ICPA. We have for a number of years now brought some of the best speakers in the world to address topics of contemporary relevance. From the sublime with Dr Salman Akhtar and Dr Mohan Agashe to the depths of cutting edge technology and research with Dr Naveed Syed and Hon Kirsty Duncan and the ethereal with Dr B N Gangadhar, we have featured it all!.

Our president, Dr Dilkhush Panjwani has put in many hours into ensuring the smooth running of the organization. It is an advantage to have perfectionistic traits I guess! For the last many years he has ensured that every event is classy and befiting of the staure ICPA has risen to.I must commend him for the incredible work he has consistently put in.

Dr K S Shivakumar as treasurer has been good support for our work in the organization. Organnizations like ours seeks to provide quality education and a good platform for effective networkng. For those who are not yet members, we ask you to become members though our myicpa.com webiste. We are working hard to ensure that it will be up and running in the next day or two. If you have any difficulty, please bring a cheque leaf during the event.

Feedback has consistently been excellent with many saying that these have been amongst the best lectures they have ever heard The year 2018 is proving to be no less, with the following speakers for the ICPA- Annual Scientific meeting on Sept 28th 2018. ICPA 2015 - VANCOUVER

This years meeting in Vancouver was a huge success in many ways. The distinguished speaker series was graced by Prof Katherine Aitchison of the U of Alberta. The talk was held on the 3rd of October at the Hyatt Regency and had an audience of about 65. While as organisers we expected more people, the turnout as in years gone by didn’t disappoint.

There was a also a change in leadership and Dr Biju Mathew took over from founder and the logest serving president of ICPA- Dr Dhanapal Natarajan. After many years at the helm, ‘Nat’ as he is popularly known, stepped down and handed the baton to the incoming president of British Columbia Psychiatric Association. Nat has with the support of Manohar and Renuka, steered the ICPA through hard times and ensured that future generations enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Dr Mathew has been active for years in various charitable activities and is well respected by colleagues and patients alike.

He has been a pillar of the ICPA, supporting and helping arrange events held in BC for many years. This event is no exception. The ability of the ICPA to further build on its strengths and expand on what it delivers is a goal that Biju wishes to pursue. He is the author of a biography of a mathematician in India and the book will son be released by the Indian PM and also a release of the movie by Amitabh Bachaan in 2016. He has won many awards and is based at Maple Ridge BC. He is part of the hospital foundation that has over the years raised large sums of money for the hospital. He works tirelessly with the homeless.

Dr Satish Shirkande who served ably as Chair of the CPA section- ICP, for many years also stepped down. Dr Shabbir Amanullah took over as Chair after the elections held at the AGM. Dr Shabbir has been involved with various activities of the ICPA and helped the IAPA when it was held in Toronto this year. He is the scientific chair of the ICPA and said his focus will be on developing its programming to involve residents and offer bursaries etc. He has won many awards and is one of the few Indians who have been conferred the honour-Distinguished Fellow of the CPA and he is also a Fellow of the APA. A gold medallist from NIMHANS in Bangalore and winner of the Cyril Potter Gold Medal in UK, he has worked tirelessly to help students with getting publications and getting through exams. He was interviewed for a documentary on creativity that was released at carlton University Ottawa in 2014.

ICPA 2014 - TORONTO

Another year and another spectacular programme is being organized at Toronto by the Indo-Canadian Psychiatric Association. Toronto is a city that needs little 'introduction'.

It is arguably Canada’s most culturally vibrant, tolerant and accommodating city.

From art, to theatre; food to recreation, it has it all and more!

Host to World pride day in June 2014, Toronto has risen in international stature. It is impossible to walk down any of the streets in Toronto and not see people from many different nationalities, ethnicities and religions.

It was host to over 1 million people who attended the World Pride day 2014- The largest ever- http://www.pridetoronto.com/festival/parade--marches/annual-pride-parade

Currently the TIFF is taking place and stars are there to be spotted! For the history buff there is the work of Banting on insulin; and many more from architecture, museums, shops, ……….

The home to some of the most advanced and rapidly evolving communications and technology companies in the world, it is a truly unique city.

For the religious of every stripe, the city is filled with

Ottawa, here we come!

Chosen as the capital of Canada by non-other than Queen Victoria herself, Ottawa is a magnificent city with a lot to offer. There are only a few cities in Canada that can compare to Ottawa. With a vibrant history, culture and multicultural cuisine, Ottawa is the perfect combination for anyone wanting to know what Canada is all about. From Kerala foods, Canadian roast beef and the Beaver tails to the quintessential Lebanese Falafel – it’s all here!

Etienne Brule was the first European to travel the Ottawa waterways and later Philemon Wright began the process of settling the land. Ottawa or adawe is from Algonquin and means ‘to trade’. It is considered to be the 3rd cleanest city in the world and a hub for technological activity in Canada. There is much to do here and whether you visit in summer or winter, you can be rest assured that there is much to do.

It is with this brief introduction to a city that we welcome you to the 2013 ICPA scientific meeting at Sheraton Ottawa Hotel; and for the first time, ICPA shall hold the AGM in the Parliament. Surely, it will be a memorable event. Every year the ICPA puts up an academic session that has a speaker from the Indian subcontinent and a national speaker.
